Strengthening the Bay Area's urban and regional food systems

From 2011 to 2024, SPUR ran a program focused on food and agriculture policy. In May 2024, the program started a new chapter as Fullwell, an independent nonprofit public policy group working to put an end to food insecurity and create a healthy, just, and sustainable food system. The team continues to focus on the same campaigns it originated at SPUR, only from a new home. Learn more at fullwell.us.

 

Double Up Food Bucks California

Piloting a scalable model for making healthy food more affordable

One of the biggest obstacles to healthy eating is the affordability of healthy food. Our Double Up Food Bucks California project helps families overcome that barrier. The project provides matching funds so that families and individuals participating in the CalFresh program can buy even more fresh fruits and vegetables at the grocery store.

Medically-Supportive Food and Nutrition

Expanding health care coverage to use food as medicine

The need for these food-based interventions in Medicaid has been exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic which highlighted many health and social inequities, especially for Black and Brown communities. This pandemic emphasizes the need to use food to treat and prevent chronic disease and to decrease the effects of health disparities and food insecurity on chronic disease.

A New Vision for Coyote Valley

San Jose’s Coyote Valley is a paradox: Just 20 minutes south of downtown, miles of farmland and open space provide natural habitat for rare and endangered species. For a decade, locals have debated whether to preserve the land or build manufacturing space and grow jobs. Last week, San Jose City Council settled the debate, agreeing to purchase and preserve more than 900 acres.

SPUR opposes the proposed revision of the categorical eligibility rules for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP). SPUR supports maximizing enrollment in federally funded food assistance programs and the administration should be working to expand eligibility not shrink it. SPUR urges the SNAP Program Design Board to oppose the proposed changes.

How Are San Francisco Schools Doing on Their Commitment to Better Food?

In 2016 the San Francisco Unified School District adopted the Good Food Purchasing Policy, setting criteria and goals for sourcing food ethically, providing healthy options and honoring fair labor practices. SPUR Support for San Jose's Recent Decisions Regarding Coyote Valley

SPUR supports two decisions the San Jose City Council recently made in regard to Coyote Valley: 1. The decision to revisit the long-term vision for Coyote Valley as part of the General Plan 4-Year Review and 2. the council’s continued support for allocating up to $50 million dollars of Measure T funding for Coyote Valley, as was envisioned in the campaign for the ballot measure.
