In celebration of Transit Month, SPUR invites you to our third annual tour of San Francisco’s iconic cable car barn and powerhouse! This behind-the-scenes experience will give SPUR members a unique look at where these historic streetcars are stored, maintained, and restored when they’re not climbing the city’s hills.
Ages 10 and up are welcome, and attendees will also have the opportunity to meet our new CEO, Sean Elsbernd. As a special part of the event, attendees will enjoy a private ride on a cable car down to Fisherman’s Wharf and back.
Cable cars are synonymous with San Francisco, but few know the full story. As the world’s last manually operated cable car system, San Francisco’s three remaining lines have remained largely unchanged since their invention in 1873 by engineer Andrew Hallidie. The Mason Street cable car barn is where these beloved vehicles rest and receive the meticulous care that keeps them running for generations to come.
