An exciting conversation about supporting “the missing middle” through the elimination of single-family zoning has emerged nationwide. But what kind of multifamily buildings should be built in place of single-family homes? As part of the Housing Affordability Strategy work currently underway, San Francisco is studying its existing small-multifamily-housing stock to understand what works, what doesn’t and how the city might continue to create this housing in the future. What are the market, economic, design and zoning barriers that currently exist, and what can be done to overcome them?
