Managing Urban Fires

Lunchtime Forum

Fire has been a scourge of cities since ancient times, but building codes and advances in firefighting had managed to make it less of a perilous concern — until recently. Ghost Ship, Grenfell Tower in London, the construction fires in Oakland and Emeryville, and urban-adjacent wildfires in both the North Bay and Southern California have all combined to make fire safety a critical issue for policymakers in California and beyond. Come hear from experts on the history and resurgence of fire safety, codes and code enforcement in urban settings.

+ Claudia Cappio / former Oakland Assistant City Administrator
+ Charles Scawthorn / SPA Risk & Univ. Calif. Berkeley
+ Ron Vidal / fire safety consultant
