Since its passage by voters in 1978, Prop. 13 has stifled revenue to cities by limiting how property taxes can increase and protecting both residential and commercial property from reassessment until they’re sold. What has been a boon for property owners has had deleterious impacts on communities across the state. This November, voters will find a new measure on the ballot that seeks to rescind the property tax protections for commercial and industrial land uses, allowing them to be taxed at full market value and generating up to $12 billion annually for schools and local governments. Come learn about the impacts of the measure and what it’ll take to implement if it passes.
