Israeli Urbanism: From Tents to Tents
Israeli Urbanism: From Tents to Tents
Urban planning in Israel is extensive and centrally controlled, and national plans have guided the development of the country since independence. But while the most recent national plan calls for strengthening existing cities and discouraging suburban sprawl, existing incentives that disperse the population to the struggling periphery do the opposite. Will Israel concentrate new growth to strengthen and intensify their existing cities and towns or will they continue the placeless sprawl, building car-dependent neighborhoods on green fields while letting city centers deteriorate? Join Nachman Shelef of the Tel Aviv-based Merhav – the Movement for Israeli Urbanism for a conversation on Israel’s Social Justice Movement and the call to refocus the country’s growth.
