Automobiles exploded in popularity throughout the quarter century following the 1906 earthquake and fire, requiring new thinking about where to store, maintain and showcase them. The Early Public Garages of San Francisco offers a perspective of the results by tracing the design history of these buildings as they masked their uses behind facades of surprising grace and nobility before falling prey to changing times.
