Pop-up concepts are, well, popping up all around us. Proxy, Envelope Architecture+Design’s temporary development experiment in Hayes Valley, continues to evolve as a dynamic urban environment mobilized by local artisans, businesses and cultural organizations. Located on two prominent lots slated for future development, Proxy reached critical mass last fall, when Suppenküche’s biergarten joined Ritual Coffee, Smitten Ice Cream and a rotating cast of food trucks and vendors on the site. Envelope Architecture+Design principal Douglas Burnham will discuss Proxy’s unfolding arts, community and retail components as a prototype for a new kind of flexible urbanism.
