Transportation Committee Meeting
SPUR's transporation committee advocates for a wide range of transportation initiatives, including
Muni reform, Central Subway and BRT construction, the downtown
extension of Caltrain, Better Streets Plan, bicycling and pedestrian
infrastructure and more.
Topic for this meeting: Safe Routes to School
Safe Routes to School programs enable
community leaders, schools and parents to encourage more children to safely
walk and bicycle to school. In the process, programs are working to
reduce traffic congestion and improve health and the environment, making
communities more livable for everyone. This is an international
movement that has just recently come to San Francisco. Come hear how
schools and communities will be transformed by the new Safe Routes to School
program in San Francisco and potential for future funding on the
federal, state and regional levels. This is a multi-agency program, managed
through the Department of Public Health’s Pedestrian Safety Project.

COMMITTEE MEETING

Transportation Committee
Across the nation, forward-thinking cities are creating street design
manuals as a tool to improve the quality and character of their
neighborhoods and districts. In San Francisco, the Better Streets Plan
creates a vision and provides guidelines for making the city's streets
safer, greener and more enjoyable for all. After nearly three years of
work and over 80 public meetings, the Plan is nearing its completion.
Come hear representatives from the City discuss the Plan's vision for
the future of San Francisco's streets and next steps to put the Plan
into action, and bring your ideas for a lively discussion about the
role of the street in the public life of the city.

In October 2008 the San Francisco
Municipal Transportation Agency (SFMTA) Board of Directors unanimously endorsed
the recommendations of the Transit Effectiveness Project (TEP). Faced with a
$129 million budget deficit, SFMTA plans to make numerous transit service
changes in November. Come hear from TEP Program Manager Julie Kirschbaum,
who will provide an update on the planned service changes and how the TEP
planning process has helped SFMTA make informed decisions about providing the
best possible transit service with limited
resources.
