Sustainable Development Committee
Chair
Katherine Howard, landscape architect
Next meeting:
No meeting currently scheduled (meets 2nd Thursdays at 8:30am)
The Sustainable
Development Committee is committed to exploring ways to influence local policy
and to implement the San Francisco Sustainability Plan. Our membership
encompasses people from a wide variety of backgrounds, including architects,
ecologists, urban planners, water-use specialists, engineers, and members of
various City departments. We welcome everyone interested in promoting
sustainability policy in San Francisco, no matter what their background. Your
level of involvement is up to you! For information or to be added to our
e-mail list, contact Committee Chair Katherine Howard.
Currently, the
Sustainable Development Committee is focusing on the following subject
areas:
- Green Roofs -
Last summer, Paul Kephart of Rana Creek, the designer for the Green Roof on
the California Academy of Sciences, gave an inspiring presentation on Green
Roofs at a Sustainable Development Committee meeting. After preliminary
planning, it was decided to hold a charrette to further explore the
opportunities and constraints for Green Roofs in San Francisco. In November
2005, the Committee held that charrette, which was coordinated by HOK. A
series of Next Steps was arrived at, and various task forces have been formed
to implement them.
Other activities: The
Sustainable Development Committee has continued to meet monthly, with a wide
variety of speakers to inform the membership on state-of-the-art topics and
discuss possible policy proposals. Some of the speakers have been:
- Marshall Foster,
Mayor's Office of Greening, who has been a guest speaker twice, just last
month speaking on Green Building Incentives in San Francisco.
- Mark Palmer, SF
Environment, spoke on that department's various programs and how the
department is working with other City departments in encouraging green
building in all new and retrofit projects.
- David Pascal, the
Operations Director for the Global Citizen Center, talked about the current
challenges of green building incentives and policies.
- Warren Mead, Chair
of the BOMA Recycling Task Force (which has since become the BOMA Committee on
the Environment) talked about that committee. Our committee members also
attended a BOMA meeting and welcomed its members to work with SPUR on
Sustainability issues.
- Julie Kirschbaum, SF
County Transportation Authority, presented the Geary BRT Plan. This resulted
in a review of the project by the committee and a letter written in
conjunction with the SPUR Transportation Committee, requesting implementation
of more sustainable practices in the project.
- Committee members
presented information on the latest developments in Biodiesel in San
Francisco, which resulted in a full Brown Bag program at SPUR.
- The Green Landscape
and Infrastructure Sub-Committee are putting the final touches on a report,
soon to be presented to the Committee and the SPUR Board.
