2017 Silver SPUR Awards: How Abdi Soltani Fights for Civil Rights

The 2017 Silver SPUR Awards, held on November 29, recognized individuals whose achievements have made San Francisco and the Bay Area a better place to live and work.

Abdi Soltani is a nationally recognized civil rights leader whose early work as an organizer in the 1990s helped transform California, which had enacted a series of regressive policies, into one of the nation’s most progressive states. Under Soltani’s tenure, the ACLU of Northern California has deepened partnerships with communities most directly impacted by injustice, and developed a presence in the Central Valley and in Sacramento, enabling the ACLU to advance the civil liberties of all Californians and better mobilize communities as a collective voice for fairness and equity. A Levi Strauss Foundation Pioneer in Justice Fellow, Soltani is actively involved in the Iranian-American community.
