2017 Good Government Awards: How Eva Cheong Modernized Transportation at SFO

The 2017 Good Government Awards, Held on March 22, recognized outstanding performances by Managers Working for the City and County of San Francisco.

Eva Cheong’s strong leadership enabled San Francisco to create the first path for the legal operation of transportation network companies at a major U.S. airport. As airports across the country grappled with how to manage transportation network companies (TNCs) like Lyft and Uber, Cheong led months of negotiations with TNC leadership, taxi and shared-ride operators, and state regulators to create a system that ensures passenger safety, is transparent to operators and generates much-needed revenue for the airport. Under Cheong’s leadership, SFO began issuing permits to TNCs in 2014; today, they comprise 61 percent of commercial ground transportation and have contributed more than $27 million in revenue to the airport.
