Roles
Public policy research
Research important public policy issues in San Francisco and the Bay Area. Evaluate legislation affecting the San Francisco area. Participate in committee meetings regarding various urban issues (i.e. Transportation, Sustainable Development, Housing, and Urban Planning).
Program and event planning
Coordinate SPUR’s events and forums. Facilitate member outreach, email SPUR members about upcoming forums and events. Track attendance and ticket sales at all events and forums. Research possible forum and event topics and potential speakers.
Development and marketing
Assist in membership recruitment and retention efforts. Research local businesses and demographic groups to find potential new members. Conduct comparative analysis with other successful membership based nonprofit organizations.
Publications and communications
Catalog press clippings and organize newsletter materials. Assist in writing and editing newsletter articles.
Nonprofit administration
Plan staff-wide events and activities.
Coordinate the Internship and Volunteer Program. Form networks with volunteer organizations, universities, colleges and business members. Coordinate ‘’SPUR In The News” media kits.
Library manager
Catalogue SPUR’s library. Ensure that current materials are in compliance with the collection policy. Handle donated materials. Manage library systems and procedures.

Who is eligible?
If you are a student in good standing at any college, university or graduate school or if you have already graduated, you are eligible to apply for this program.
What are the internship sessions?
There are three internship sessions:
- September through December
- January through April
- May though August
Alternatively, we can adjust the sessions to fit your schedule.
What are the work hours?
Interns generally work 10 to 20 hours a week during our office hours, 8:00 AM to 6:00 PM Monday though Friday.
Is this a paid internship?
Internships at SPUR are unpaid. However interns will enjoy SPUR membership benefits such as free admission to all SPUR forums and tours, and a one year subscription to SPUR’s monthly newsletters (depending on intern hours).
Can I get academic credit?
Awarding academic credit for an internship is at the discretion of your college or university. We will assist you in providing the appropriate information needed for credit, but arrangements should be made before you begin your internship.
