Senator Ted Stevens was right: the Internet is in fact “a series of tubes.” For all the talk of the “placelessness” of our digital age, the Internet is as fixed in real, physical spaces as any railroad or telephone system. Andrew Blum, author of Tubes: A Journey to the Center of the Internet, argues that we can’t truly know the web’s possibilities if we don’t understand what it’s made of.
