West Oakland’s 16th Street Station, built in 1912, was the western terminus of the Transcontinental Railroad and once handled 400 trains per day. Damaged in the 1989 Loma Prieta Earthquake, it remains an eerie and little-known architectural gem. The building is slated for renovation as the centerpiece of the Central Station project.
