Boat Tour of the Bay Bridge
Boat Tour of the Bay Bridge
A private boat tour of the Bay Bridge narrated by Bart Ney, Senior Communications Manager at the California Department of Transportation and John Sindzinski, Manager of Planning & Development at the Water Emergency Transportation Agency (WETA).
With the new self-anchored suspension (SAS) tower nearly completed, it is a unique moment in the bridge’s construction to witness the awe-inspiring engineering feats which will make the Bay Bridge the largest SAS bridge in the world.
The San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge Seismic Safety Projectis a joint venture by Caltrans, the Bay Area Toll Authority and the California Transportation Commission to retrofit the multiple spans of the Bay Bridge. As one of the country’s busiest bridges, it withstands traffic of around 280,000 vehicles per day. Due to extensive damage to the Eastern section of the bridge during the Loma Prieta earthquake in 1989, repairs and seismic upgrades have been underway for over two decades. The new sections of the bridge are expected to be open to traffic in 2013.
