Public Policy Ballot Analysis Internship (Graduate Student)

ABOUT SPUR
The San Francisco Planning and Urban Research Association (SPUR) is one of North America’s preeminent urban planning and public policy organizations. Through research, advocacy and public education, SPUR promotes good planning and good government. SPUR is a member-supported nonprofit organization. We have recently moved into a new location at 654 Mission Street, with exhibition space and an enlarged space for public events.

GENERAL SUMMARY

This public policy intern will help SPUR’s policy team with the preparation for the local and statewide June 2010 election. Interns will be expected to perform background research, organize meetings, and write extensively in preparation for this election. This position is appropriate for anyone with strong research skills who wants to learn the finer details of the election process. In particular, we are looking for Masters students or recent graduates in public policy, city and regional planning, or a closely related field.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Review previous SPUR policy and election results
  • Assist in booking speakers and organizing ballot analysis meetings
  • Complete exhaustive summaries on all ballot issues
  • Attend SPUR’s ballot analysis meetings from 8:00 to 9:30 AM on Tuesday and Thursday mornings. It is preferable that the intern be able to cluster his or her weekly hours at SPUR on Tuesday and Thursdays.

  • Interest in SPUR’s issues
  • Strong research and writing skills
  • Ability to communicate effectively over the phone and via email
  • Note taking skills
  • Facility with data analysis and excel

We are looking for an intern currently enrolled in (or a recent graduate of) a graduate program in public policy or a related field. College graduates with exceptional skills will also be considered.
