Hydra Mendoza-McDonnell is a strong advocate and supporter of public education. She is a product of public schools, a parent of two children in public schools, a former preschool teacher and an education advisor.

Hydra was the former Executive Director and a founding member of Parents for Public Schools of San Francisco, a national organization who engages parents and community members to support, promote, and improve public education.

In 2005, Hydra was first appointed by Mayor Gavin Newsom to his Policy Council on Children, Youth and Families; and later as his Education Advisor and Liaison to the San Francisco Unified School District, which was a newly created senior staff level position in the Newsom administration. Hydra’s work allows her to build a strong partnership between the Public School System (Pre-K to 20) and the City. She continues to serve under Mayor Edwin Lee, as his Senior Advisor on Education and Family Services.

In 2006, 2010 and 2014, Hydra successfully won a city-wide bid and re-election for a seat on the San Francisco Unified School District Board of Education. Hydra is the first and only Filipina elected to office in San Francisco. She has been honored by the California Association for Bilingual Education – Parent of the Year Award (2005), San Francisco State University Masters in Public Administration – Public Service Award (2008), 100 Most Influential Filipinas (2009, 2013), Access and Equity Community Education Award – Pin@y Educational Partnerships (2011), College Track – Hero Award (2013), and Extraordinary Service Award by the Mission Economic Development Agency (2013).

Hydra is a Board Member for SPUR, member of the United Way Women’s Leadership Council, and Advisory Board Member to Youth Speaks, College Track, Old Skool Café, and San Francisco Court Appointed Special Advocates for Children (SFCASA). She is married, has two children, and lives the Bayview community in San Francisco.
